The Playful Botanical

Contemporary Botanical Art — Hand-Painted by Inessa Falina

Botanical art doesn’t have to be purely scientific. It can hold precision and personality in the same brushstroke.

Inessa Falina is a London-based botanical artist who paints plants the way a portrait painter paints a person — with attention to exact detail and room for character to come through. Her work has been shown at The Mall Galleries and Chelsea Old Town Hall, and is held in private collections across the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia.

What Makes This Work Different

Most botanical art aims for accuracy alone. Inessa trained for that too. She holds a Diploma in Botanical Illustration from the Society of Botanical Artists, a Certificate from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. But accuracy was never the whole point.

This is where her contemporary collection, The Playful Botanical, comes in. Fruit and vegetables painted with the same careful observation as a rare flower — given an unusual sense of humour instead of a straight scientific treatment. One piece, Posing Banana, was selected by Saatchi Art and featured directly on their website.

The result reads as botanical art first and rewards a second look. Someone wanting something more distinctive than a standard print finds it here — paintings with observation, craft and a point of view, not decoration.

How The Playful Botanical Began

The collection began almost by accident. In 2024, Inessa submitted a single botanical painting to The Holy Art, a non-botanical exhibition in London. It found an audience there that had little interest in botanical accuracy and a great deal of interest in character. The Playful Botanical collection grew from that one painting.

“I created The Playful Botanical because I began to notice that fruit and vegetables can have the most unexpected personalities, hidden in their shapes, curves and little imperfections. I wanted to show that contemporary botanical art can be different, moving beyond traditional botanical portraits to embrace imagination, character and even a sense of humour, while remaining true to the beauty of nature.”

A Gift With Personality

Some gifts are chosen with a special person in mind. A birthday, an anniversary or simply a moment that calls for something a little different. A painting from The Playful Botanical brings precision and humour together, making it a thoughtful choice for someone who looks closely at the world and enjoys what they find.
